Technical Information
ORB's
technical architecture
ORB has drawn telecoms best practice to define a technical architecture
which can deliver optimum performance, reliability, but in a solution which
ensures the community aspects are emphasised.
Rather than rely upon a single Internet feed, distributed to a single community,
we build Community Area Networks which link multiple communities together, with multiple
internet feeds. This ensures a carrier class service but in a community model.
A resilient backbone network links the communities together, with wireless mesh
technology delivering the service to customer in such a way that, where possible, the customer is in
view of multiple mesh points to yet further increase resilience.
ORB undertakes to provide and maintain everything from the
backhaul to the customer's wall socket - anything connected to the
socket is the customers domain - but being a community company, we will endeavour to help where we can, providing equipment to support our customers where required. Find out more about other products available.
The Future
Now broadband is increasingly available, ORB has started work on
a series of solutions which help individuals, businesses, and
communities to exploit their connectivity. Broadband should be one
of the most liberating things one can do, technologically - ORB aims
to make that a reality with new solutions and services:
- Voice - ORB will soon be launching an unmetered phone call
service
- Community radio - working with community groups and
local colleges, ORB will facilitate community radio stations
- CCTV - using our local infrastructure, we will soon start
offering a low-cost CCTV solution (which could also be used to
watch the local football game!!)
Keep watching this space - much more coming soon!
